More about GitHub Actions

GitHub Actions is a powerful CI/CD platform integrated directly into GitHub. It enables software workflow automation through event-driven actions, from code review to production deployment.

History

GitHub , founded by Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, and PJ Hyett, introduced GitHub Actions in October 2018. This innovation was developed by Sam Lambert and the GitHub team to provide a native CI/CD solution directly within the GitHub platform.

The development of GitHub Actions was heavily influenced by existing CI/CD tools like Jenkins and Travis CI but aimed to provide more seamless integration with the GitHub ecosystem. Following Microsoft's acquisition in 2018, the platform saw further expansion.

Today, GitHub Actions is a central pillar of modern DevOps practices and has fundamentally changed how teams develop and deploy software. The platform has also driven the evolution of GitOps practices and set new standards for Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automated workflows.
